Week 5 - Share findings from ETF
As mentioned in Module 2, when we read the article "Raising Cultural Awareness in the English Language Classroom," the English Teaching Forum is a professional journal for English teachers. It is run by The Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, U.S. Department of State. Besides excellent articles on teaching, the journal and website are rich resources for EFL lesson plan ideas.

Now it is time for you to explore the English Teaching Forum (ETF) (Links to an external site.) and find a lesson plan that is of interest to you. It makes sense for you to read about a lesson plan that could really work in your teaching context you, so I encourage you to spend time on the ETF before deciding which lesson plan you will review. Expect to spend at least 15 minutes looking around.
When you first go to ETF, you will see a link to the current issue. In each issue, there is one article that has a specific lesson idea. Some of these articles are called Try This. Others are labeled as Classroom applications/ activities. These are the articles to concentrate on for our present purpose. To find older issues of ETF, you need to go to https://americanenglish.state.gov/past-issues-english-teaching-forum (Links to an external site.), which is linked from the main ETF page. Spend time looking at older issues and the Try This and classroom activity articles in each one. Choose a lesson plan that looks especially interesting to you.
HINT: After you get to the "past issues" part of the site, type into the search box "lesson plans" This will bring up a huge number of articles with lesson plans. And on the left, a detailed menu where you can select the level, skills, and topic to narrow your search.
After you identify the lesson plan you want to review, read it!
Finally, please post the following in our forum:
- First, a simple (2-5 sentences) description of the activity.
- Include the URL of the article.
- What do you like about the activity?
- What adjustments would you have to make to the plan for it to work in your context?
It should go without saying, we’ll all be interested to see what other participants find!
