Module 1: Depth of Reflection: A Rubri
There are some things we learn though memorization. There are many things that require deep thinking and reflection to learn. The development of intercultural competence is in this second category. In order to develop intercultural competence, we need to think and reflect deeply on lived experiences with culture and intercultural encounters. We also need to think and reflect deeply on ourselves as cultural beings.
How can we tell if we are thinking and reflecting deeply? There are indicators that deep reflection shows. The Depth of Reflection Rubric was developed to show this. The way you use the Depth of Reflection Rubric is this:
- Choose a text. For our purposes today, you will analyze what you wrote for "Cultural Introductions - You and Your Classroom."
- Divide the text into sections. Each section should describe one basic idea. This could be as little as one sentence or as much as a paragraph or two.
- Look at the rubric and the descriptions it contains. What is the highest number you can assign the section of text?
- Repeat this for every section of the text.
You will be doing this soon with your own writing. First, however, you need to become familiar with the rubric. Please take about 15 minutes to look over the Depth of Reflection Rubric . Then if you want more ideas about how to apply the rubric, watch this video (5:34) where two people talk about how to use the rubric. If you prefer, you can read the video transcript below instead.
